The “creepy clown” phenomenon that has spread across the U.S., Canada and the UK, has made its way to Detroit.

Kendall Hosendove said he wouldn’t get off the bus if he knew a clown was hanging off the back.

“I would have to stay on the bus until I know for sure he’s off of there,” he said. “I don’t want to get off where he’s going to get off with me.”

Hosendove added that the video raised concerns about the safety of those carrying out these pranks.

“Everybody wants to try it, you know what I mean, but it will end up getting somebody hurt,” Hosendove said. “That will get them hurt for real.”

Though most “creepy clown” sightings are innocuous, some have turned violent as the craze has spread. In September, a 16-year-old Pennsylvania boy was wearing a clown mask when he was stabbed to death by a neighbour.

Earlier this month, Virginia police said a 13-year-old girl was charged after she allegedly asked a person posing as a clown on social media to kill one of her teachers.

DDOT said in a statement that the safety of riders was its “number one priority,” and had asked police to investigate the incident.

“We have significantly increased our Transit Police presence and have installed surveillance cameras inside and outside of all our DDOT coaches,” the statement said. “We have forwarded the video to the Detroit Police Department for review.”

According to the Detroit Free Press, the video was uploaded to Facebook on Saturday by a user named Detwan Hall.

A second video showing a person wearing a clown mask was also uploaded to the Facebook page.

Residents hope authorities can get the clown epidemic under control.

“Something is going to have to happen,” said Hosendove. “It’s getting closer and closer too.”
