The Toronto Police Service has officially unveiled the new colours for its cruisers as the service works to modernize its fleet of vehicles over the next four years.
Chief Mark Saunders posted the new design on Twitter Tuesday morning with the message “Now THIS is the new @TorontoPolice vehicle!”
According to Toronto police spokeswoman Meaghan Grey, the design is part of the service’s efforts to update its image.
Officials said the new grey Ford Interceptors will be rolled out over the next four years as cruisers need to be replaced. Police said there won’t be an extra cost for the new design.
Toronto police said its cruisers are in operation 24 hours a day and the vehicles last around four-and-a-half years. Eighty vehicles are scheduled to be replaced in 2016. Approximately 500 cars will have the new design.
Police will still maintain a small amount of “stealth” traffic enforcement vehicles. Those cars are also grey, but do not have lights on the roof or highly visible markings.
