WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Goldeyes are just three wins away from their third championship in franchise history.

With their backs against the wall the Goldeyes reeled off back to back wins in St. Paul to eliminate the St. Paul Saints three games to two. The Goldeyes bussed it back to Winnipeg overnight and players were given the day off on Tuesday.

“Fun celebration but we’re ready to get back to work tomorrow,” said Goldeyes outfielder Adam Heisler.

The Goldeyes and Wichita Wingnuts will kick off the championship series on Wednesday at Shaw Park with game two to be played on Thursday. They only met four times in the regular season with each the Fish and Wingnuts winning twice, so neither club is very familiar with the other.

“Ya we don’t know too much,” said Heisler. “Evidently they have a good lineup, they have a good squad.”

The Wingnuts posted a 61-39 record in the regular season to win the South Division title for the third year in a row.

“It’s gonna be a big challenge,” said Heisler. “We’re gonna have to come up here and take the first two hopefully at home and then see what we can do down there in Wichita.”

Edwin Carl will get the game one start for the Goldeyes while the Wingnuts will counter with Tim Brown. Kevin McGovern is scheduled to start game two for Winnipeg with Mikey O’Brien lined up for game three in Wichita on Saturday.
