ROSEMONT – The borough of Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie announced that starting September it will be providing reimbursements to its employees who frequently travel on foot, by bicycle or via public transit.
It is in all in an effort to encourage active lifestyles and reduce automobile use in the city.
“As a public entity, we want to set the example,” said borough mayor François William Croteau.
“We are proud of our initiative that will contribute to the fight against climate change and help improve the overall health of our employees.”
City employees who bike, or travel to work on foot, could receive a reimbursement of 25 cents per kilometre on their round-trip.
Those who use public transit could get up to 35 per cent off on their monthly fare with the Société de transport de Montreal.
For Suzanne Lareau, Vélo Quebec’s director general, this type of employee incentive is exactly what she had been hoping for.
“It’s solid initiatives like this one that will change the way we treat our transportation,” said Suzanne Lareau.
“We hope this will inspire other public and private organisations in Montreal and all over Quebec.”
Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie is the first borough to implement this kind of program.
