Environment Canada expanded a severe thunderstorm warning for central Alberta Thursday afternoon.
A severe thunderstorm watch was issued shortly after noon for much of the central portion of the province.
At 4 p.m., Environment Canada extended the alert to include the Airdrie, Cochrane and Olds regions and changed some of the watches to warnings.
They said they are tracking a severe thunderstorm that is currently west of Olds and moving east.
Edmonton was also under the severe thunderstorm warning Thursday afternoon.
Wind gusts of upwards of 100 kilometres per hour and nickel-sized hail were possible Thursday afternoon, Environment Canada said. Heavy rain was also possible.
“Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year,” Environment Canada’s website read. “Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors.”
