It’s that time of the year – prom season.
While most may be worrying about what prom dress to wear or what shoes will match, a group of high school students in Missouri came together to make one student’s prom extra special.
Christine Guertzgen was crowned prom queen over the weekend at Louisiana High School.
She was born with Down syndrome.

In the age of bullying, Jennifer Guertzgen says her daughter’s peers showed exactly the opposite.
“There’s always been a struggle for everything,” Jennifer Guertzgen told CBS. “My biggest fear was them rejecting her, but they’ve never done that. I was so overwhelmed with emotion”
The senior class nominated Christine and the junior class voted for her. She said the crowning was a memory of a lifetime.
“It was awesome the kids recognized that everyone has something to bring to the table to give her an opportunity to shine. I was really proud of the kids for what they did,” principal Derrick Branstetter said.
Christine’s peers knew she deserved the special moment.
“Everyone was on the same page. We all thought Christine was the person who should be our prom queen. She deserves it,” student Ashley Corbin said.
