Gardeners getting weeks early start for the season – Apr 30, 2016

REGINA – Although the May long weekend is usually the marker for getting a start on gardening, this year’s unseasonably warm weather has pushed that start date up by a few weeks.

For the George-Rein family, planting potatoes so early in the year is unprecedented.

At the community garden Grow Regina, Marie George and her family were out in full force hoping to make a dent on their herbs and produce early on.

As well, George explained the early season is also a chance to cultivate conversation with other farmers.

“It is seeing everybody around. We do have a lot of new Canadians that are out here asking for mentorship on what they’re growing. We have a lot of old timers that are out here”, George said.

“It’s a true reflection of what our community is.”

At Dutch Growers’ Garden and Homes, owner Tim van Duyvandyk said he’s never seen a season like this spring up so early.

“It’s Saskatchewan so we always get a snow fall on May long weekend, but I think this year is going to be beautiful all the way until June 1st”, Van Duyvandyk explained.

Van Duyvandyk explained sales have been steadily growing, and he attributed it to the warm weather.

The garden centre saw an increase of 30 to 40 per cent, compared to the same time last year.

Around the garden, shoppers explained they already started weeks earlier and are hoping temperatures don’t dip below freezing.

Van Duyvandyk believes the heat is here to stay. However, he advises to have a blanket to cover the plants, just in case.
