MONTREAL – Former provincial and federal politician, Yvon Charbonneau, has passed away in a Florida hospital, following a stroke on April 7.

He was 75.

The Centrale des syndicats du Québec (CSQ) confirmed Charbonneau’s death Friday in a statement.

“He was charismatic, impressive in physique and intellect, a determined activist, he was as demanding of his those around him as he was with himself and showed exceptional rigor,” said Louise Chabot, CSQ president.

Charbonneau was widely known in Quebec as a unionist, pioneering the genuine union status of the Centrale de l’enseignement du Québec (CEQ) and forming a common front with other unions in the 1970s.

His extensive career, both as a teacher and an activist, eventually led him to politics, where he served as a Quebec Liberal from 1994 to 1997 and then a federal Liberal from 1997 to 2004.
