Shocking details emerge on fifth day of Giesbrecht trial

WARNING: The following story contains details readers may find disturbing.

WINNIPEG — A former friend and co-worker of Andrea Giesbrecht says she often talked about self induced abortion when they knew each other in the late 1990’s.

Giesbrecht is on trial for hiding the remains of six infants in a Winnipeg storage locker.

Danielle Devereaux testified Giesbrecht kept her 1997 pregnancy secret from everyone else in the office where they worked.

“She said she didn’t want the baby,” said Devereaux.

During the pregnancy, Giesbrecht also used to talk about ways to perform self induced abortion, testified Devereaux.

“Punch herself in the stomach, use a coat hanger or over a chair,” said Devereaux when asked what methods Giesbrecht would discuss.

The baby was delivered, although Giesbrecht drove herself to the hospital and gave birth within 30 minutes of arriving, according to Devereaux.

Devereaux also testified Giesbrecht called in sick before this pregnancy, telling her she had a miscarriage.

Giesbrecht called the office from a pay phone, saying she had seen blood on the sidewalk.

Giesbrecht isn’t charged with hurting any of the six infants found in the storage locker in 2014, just concealing their bodies.

However, medical and DNA experts have testified the babies most likely belonged to Giesbrecht and her husband and that some, if not all, were born alive.
