There has been another disturbing prowling incident at UBC. Early Friday, a man was seen pressing himself against a dorm room residence. As Jill Bennett reports, he also tried unsuccessfully to break into the building – Apr 2, 2016

The University of British Columbia has warned residents of another prowler incident on campus.

On Friday, the university sent out an email to members of the campus community detailing an incident at the Marine Drive Residence that read, in part:

“At approximately 2:00 am this morning, a male was seen pressing himself against an exterior window of the lounge of Marine Drive, Building 5. The resident in the lounge left, and the male tried (but was unable) to enter the building. The RCMP and Campus Security were called, arrived quickly, but were unable to apprehend the suspect.”

The message did not indicate whether Friday’s incident is linked to previous assaults and lurking incidents on UBC’s Point Grey campus.

Last Friday, a 20-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in the 3200-block of Wesbrook Mall in UBC’s South Campus residential neighbourhood.

Police said the woman was walking alone on the evening of March 25 when a man suddenly came out of a wooded area and grabbed her, violently shaking her with both arms and forcing her to the ground.

The woman was hit in the head, but fought off the man — who fled — and called 911.

Police said last week’s attack may be related to a series of “night prowler events” where a man was seen lurking in bathrooms and bedrooms at UBC residences, and fled when he was detected.

Investigators said the latest incidents do not appear connected to six sexual assaults on campus in 2013. No arrest was ever made in connection with those assaults, but a UBC report recommended the use of more security cameras.

On Thursday, a former UBC student filed a human rights complaint alleging the school discriminated against her and other complainants in its handling of sexual assault reports.

Glynnis Kirchmeier said the university failed to act on complaints about a male PhD student over long periods of time, resulting in additional women becoming the victims of sexual violence.
