The debate over more surveillance cameras at UBC after a string of sexual assaults is heating up.
A new campus safety report suggests more surveillance cameras should be installed at the university.
In a release, it states “the university will seek community input on the expansion of electronic surveillance on campus at key entry and exit points, including the main transit hubs, for the purpose of recording individuals and vehicles coming on to campus, and the investigation of crimes and other serious incidents after the fact. As part of this process, the university will develop a clear policy to address the implementation and appropriate use of CCTV camera surveillance, taking into account all relevant privacy considerations.”
Simon Fraser University and BCIT are equipped with plenty of CCTV cameras that are very visible in public places.
UBC says they do have security cameras but none are located in the areas where the six sexual assaults took place.
At a press conference in October, university president Stephen Toope said his administration is cautious about installing public security cameras on campus.
Other recommendations cover lighting, programming and communications.
