Winnipeg Jets sign free agent forward Brandon Tanev

WINNIPEG – Undrafted forward Brandon Tanev has found a home with the Winnipeg Jets. The NHL club signed the 24-year-old to a two-way contract for the rest of the season.

Tanev recently finished his collegiate career with the NCAA Division I’s Providence College. The Toronto-born scored 15 goals and 13 assists in 38 games during his senior season. Tanev leaves Providence with 35 goals and 42 assists in 149 games spread over four years. He scored the game-winning goal in the team’s national championship win in 2015.

The Jets plan to include Tanev in their practices the next few days. Head coach Paul Maurice hopes he will be able to play in at least one of Winnipeg’s final six regular season games.

“We’re happy he chose us,” said Maurice. “He’s got real good speed and high intensity. The biggest challenge with young players is getting them used to the pace of professional hockey. He’s already got that.”

Tanev is the younger brother of former Manitoba Moose and current Vancouver Canucks defenceman Chris Tanev.
