Manitoba Election 2016: Swan River riding

Summary: A rural riding in central Manitoba where NDP MLA Ron Kostyshyn will seek re-election in the historically NDP stronghold.

Boundaries: Cedar Lake and Grand Rapids lie in the northeastern point of this riding with the intersection of Highway 60 and 10 in the northwestern corner. Duck Mountain Provincial Park lies near the southwestern boundary with East Bay and Magnet in the southeastern. This riding contains Pine Creek First Nation, Sapotaweyak Cree Nation and Chemawawin First Nation.

Last Election: The NDP’s Ron Kostyshyn defeated the Progressive Conservative’s Dave Powell with 55 per cent of the votes while Powell brought in 40 per cent in 2011.

History: Swan River is historically an NDP stronghold, leading the riding since the 1990 election. The Progressive Conservatives put up a fight in the late 70’s and 80’s, but the last time they won the riding was during the 1988 election.
