Home with 800 marijuana plants destroyed in Joe Rich fire

RCMP are investigating a fire at 4115 Hwy 33 East in Joe Rich. contributed/ Global Okanagan

The Kelowna Fire Department and Joe Rich Fire Department spent much of the evening battling a fire at a legal marijuana grow up at a three-storey home.

It happened at 4115 Hwy 33 East, just outside the Kelowna City limits. Flames were seen on the roof moving into the attic, but it was reportedly downed wires inside the home that prompted fire crews to abandon the inside of the structure and call police.

Fire fighters began only pouring water on the outside of the structure until police attended and FortisBC could turn off the power to the home.

Captain Eric Simpson says the house had 800 marijuana plants.

Fire crews cleared the scene at 10:41 p.m. telling dispatch that the property owner has been warned to stay away from the house.

Simpson says the trusses and floor had collapsed, and the house is a write off.
