LONGUEUIL – Parc de la Cité is a 10,000 sq. foot park in the Longueuil borough of Saint-Hubert.

Recently, some residents have insisted the city is starting to forget about the park’s history.

“As a citizen in St. Hubert, having grown up in Greenfield Park, I’ve noticed with our present majority government in Longueuil…slowly the name Greenfield Park and St. Hubert is being removed,” said Saint-Hubert resident Brian Peddar.

He said over the last few years, borough signs in parks, arenas and fields have all been removed.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Even some street signs have been changed to read simply, Longueuil.

Peddar explained this is a matter of identity.

“We’re proud of our history and our culture,” he told Global News.

“Our ancestors built these towns that are now boroughs, we’re part of the City of Longueuil, but can we not have respect and sensitivity for our visual identity?”

Peddar has been bringing the matter up in vain at council meetings for years, so finally last May, he started a petition.

He’s accumulated over 1,400 signatures.

One Greenfield Park resident told Global News she’s noticed the change and doesn’t like it at all.

“I think it’s awful,” she said.

“Greenfield Park is Greenfield Park – it’s always been Greenfield Park, as far as I know.”

Global News tried to reach out to the City of Longueuil for comment, but was told a representative was unavailable.

Residents plan to present the petition to the city at a council meeting on Jan. 19.
