Public skating
City rinks at Nathan Phillips and Mel Lastman squares are open on Christmas Day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Unfortunately, the unseasonably warm temperatures have basically melted the rink at Nathan Phillips Square, forcing it to close on Christmas Eve. City crews are hoping to reopen it for Christmas Day.

Ripley’s Aquarium
The downtown aquarium is one of the few tourist attractions open on Christmas Day. Ripley’s remains open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both December 24 and 25.

Movies
If you’re planning to catch Star Wars or another movie – yes, there are other movies out these days – you have no shortage of options. Most major theatres are open for business and a number of high-profile new flicks, including Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight and Jennifer Lawrence’s new one Joy, are opening that day. Some repertory and second-run cinemas are closed.

Festivus
The Drake Hotel is hosting a trivia night and dinner in honour of the Seinfeldian airing of grievances. Some feats of strength could help combat that Christmastime calorie intake.

Disney on Ice
Snow White, Rapunzel, Cinderella and other Disney favourites strap on their skates in Dare to Dream at the Rogers Centre.

Free food!
Plenty of restaurants are open Christmas Day, some serving traditional Christmas meals and other goodies. The Japanese eatery Hapa Izakaya is offering a free buffet dinner from 8-10 p.m. on Christmas Day in case you haven’t had enough to eat already.

Christmas flower show
The annual show at Allen gardens features a dazzling array of seasonal flora, including over 40 different types of poinsettias. It’s open from 10-5 on Christmas Day and admission is free.
