Deadly Saskatoon home invasion ends in charges against 4

SASKATOON – Four people have been charged following a police investigation into a Saskatoon sudden death. Officers went to a residence in the 300-block of Garrison Crescent on Oct. 14 after receiving reports of gun shots.

Corey Favel, 25, was found dead at the scene. An autopsy determined he died from a gunshot wound.

Investigators now say Favel was shot by someone living at the residence while Favel and four others were carrying out what police are now calling a home invasion.

“We had witnesses in this case who were present in the home and I think they were able to develop their theories based on that and some of the physical evidence as well,” said Saskatoon police spokesperson Alyson Edwards.

Although she wouldn’t confirm if the home invasion was gang related, Edwards did say it was not a random act.

“Certainly we’ve seen in Saskatoon that when you have drugs and you have weapons involved, you may have some gang involvement as well,” stated Edwards.

“This was a home invasion this was an attempt to get into that home, using force, using weapons and perhaps to have access to the drugs.”

Police officials said charges against the occupant in the shooting death will not be laid based on evidence and after consultation with the public prosecution office.

The four other men alleged to have taken part in the home invasion have been charged.

Dustin Sand, 29, is charged with manslaughter for causing the unlawful death of Favel. Sand was arrested Thursday at the Prince Albert provincial correctional centre.

He is also charged with robbery with a firearm, using an imitation firearm during an offence, possession of a weapon, break and enter, and wearing a mask or disguise while committing an offence.

Last Saturday, police arrested Nicholas MacLeod, 20 in Carlyle and charged him with robbery with a firearm, using an imitation firearm during an offence, possession of a weapon, break and enter, and wearing a mask or disguise while committing an offence.

On Dec. 8, Nathaniel Narula, 23, was arrested in Saskatoon and on the same day, Cody Favel, 22 was arrested in Regina. Both are facing the same charges as MacLeod.

All have made their initial court appearances on the charges and have been remanded in custody.

Prior to the shooting, the home on Garrison Crescent had been under a police investigation for possible drug trafficking.

Police say they wrapped up the investigation on Nov. 5 when they arrested a resident of the home, Anita Lynn Favreau.

“She was living in the home and we know that drugs were being sold out of that home, she’s been charged accordingly, but she was not the person that fired that shot,” said Edwards.

She is facing five charges including trafficking cocaine and methamphetamine, along with the possession of the proceeds of crime.

Favreau, 45, is scheduled to appear Friday in Saskatoon provincial court.
