WINNIPEG — Elsaida Alerta says she has had a microphone in her hand since she learned how to talk.
“There’s a photo of me pretty much as a baby holding a microphone and singing,” the 29-year -old said.
Alerta just returned from Singapore where she took home the title of best karaoke singer in the world, representing Canada and Winnipeg.
“It was the most amazing feeling,” she said. “I feel so proud to win the title for my country. No one from Canada has ever won before.”
Alerta can’t compete in the championship again after winning the title, but will be performing at the next world championship in Vancouver in 2016.
In the meantime, she plans to continue hosting karaoke and bartending at Lime Light Tavern in Winnipeg.
“It’s like a family here,” Alerta said.
