Toronto couple charged for abandoning children in van while they gambled at casino

TORONTO – A 35-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man faces child abandonment charges after they allegedly left their two young children inside a van while both of them gambled at a casino northeast of Toronto.

Durham Regional Police said the children, 3 and 5 years of age, were located in the parking lot of the Great Blue Heron Casino on Island Road in Scugog on Nov. 24.

Police said they were found sleeping alone inside the van with no parents or guardians in sight.

It is alleged they were inside the vehicle for about 30 minutes before their parents could be located.

Police said the temperature outside was at the freezing mark and “both children showed signs of being cold” but neither of them required medical attention.

Both children have been placed in protective custody by the Children’s Aid Society, police said.
