Sicamous woman pleads guilty in car surfing death case

The crash happened in August of 2013 in Sicamous. An RCMP officer spotted Troy Charlton, who was 49-years-old at the time, laying on the community's Main Street with severe injuries.

SICAMOUS — The woman criminally charged after a bizarre accident in the Shuswap left a man dead, has pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death.

The crash happened in August of 2013 in Sicamous. An RCMP officer spotted Troy Charlton, who was 49-years-old at the time, laying on the community’s Main Street with severe injuries.

Charlton later died in hospital. It was first reported as a hit and run but later, criminal charges were laid against 48-year-old Christina Laforge.

The Sicamous woman was charged with impaired driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

Police said it is believed Charlton was riding on the hood of a vehicle as it drove down the street until it came to a sudden stop, throwing Charlton onto the pavement.

The sentencing hearing is scheduled for February 1, 2016.
