North Shore Rescue (NSR) spent several hours last night helping two hikers who got lost on Grouse Mountain.

The man and woman set off on their hike at about 11 a.m. yesterday and planned to hike from Lynn Valley to Grouse Mountain but the pair got lost when they hit snow and darkness fell.

Luckily for the hikers, they were able to make a 9-1-1 call and NSR was able to find them before the pair had to spend the night on Grouse Mountain. Rescuers said the two hikers did not have lights or extra clothes and were freezing when they were found.

The pair said it was a learning experience.

“We wanted to go back to the gondola and go home and we could not find the trail mark,” said one of the lost hikers Erica Duhaney. “We learned our lesson… we were not that prepared.”

Even more troubling, rescuers said the pair had not told anyone where they were heading that day and if their phone had not worked, things could have gone badly.

“They were very, very lucky to get out to an area where they could make a 9-1-1 call,” said , NSR search manager Allan McMordie. “If they had not made it out of the Hanes Valley, there’s no coverage down there. They could have still been there as we speak.”
