WINNIPEG — The Canadian Cyclocross Championships returned to The Forks this weekend with thousands of Manitobans taking part or watching dozens of different races.
It began with the Kick Cancer Cyclocross Derby on Friday which was a series of fun races for all skill levels. Proceeds went to the Cancer Care Manitoba Foundation.

The marquee event, the Canadian Cyclocross Championships, took place Saturday involving some of the top racers in the country.
On Sunday an international competition for professionals and amateurs took place called the Manitoba Grand Prix of Cyclocross.
Cyclocross racers peddle through courses with different types of terrain and sections where they must dismount and carry their bikes over natural or man-made barriers. The course at the Forks is 3.2 kms long and includes areas with grass, gravel, sand, dirt, cobblestones, wood and pavement.
Last year the event was was held at The Forks for the first time.
Co-chair of the organizing committee Chris Huebner says the sport is quickly gaining popularity, “From ten years ago when I started racing with maybe 10-15-20 riders for a day, we’re now getting almost 300 in Manitoba … it’s just booming because it’s fun, it’s spectator friendly and it’s family friendly.”
