Mayor Tory is full of Jays spirit, as new flag flies high above City Hall

TORONTO – Mayor John Tory is waving a new flag on top of City Hall in support of the Toronto Blue Jays.

In light of the Jays moving on to the playoffs, a flag raising ceremony was held on Tuesday in support for the boys in blue.

Tory said he’s excited for the memorable moments that come with playoff games.

“In ’93 I was at the game and in ’92 I was watching on television and you just remember  – who will ever forget the Joe Carter homerun – you can’t forget that….I just hope as we go through the playoffs we’ll have more memorable moments like that.”

Many city councillors dropped by the flag raising to show their support.

The city is in the process of coordinating details that would allow people to watch Jays games at Nathan Phillips Square.

“We are just putting the final details on. Hopefully we’ll have it here for the home games for those who can’t get a ticket to come here and watch the games at Nathan Phillips Square,” Tory said.

“The work of the art that’s on the square is contracted and committed to be there for two weeks and we can’t have people walk on it, because if they walk on it, it will get ruined.”

The Jays will challenge rivals Texas Rangers on Thursday at the Rogers Centre.

Tory played host to the Austin’s Mayor Steve Adler on Monday evening, where he sparked a conversation on the friendly rivalry between the Jays and Rangers.

“He… was a Rangers fan and I gave him a Blue Jays hat and told the whole delegation from Austin that he danced around my office wearing saying ‘Go Jays’, which wasn’t true, but I just thought I would have a little fun with it.”

This is the first time the Jays have made a playoff spot since 1993, when they won the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
