WINNIPEG — Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries is moving downtown, but they’re not building new, they’re going to renovate a 41-year-old building.

The “Medical Arts” building at 233 Kennedy Street will be purchased for $7.9 million with another $66 million in redevelopment and expansion.

The 15-story structure will be renovated with a five story addition made to the north side of the property.

Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries plans to move 400 of its staff from five different properties to the downtown location.

The building is currently less than 50 per cent occupied by approximately 40 medical and five commercial tenants.

MLL said the location is “practical” and will further contribute to downtown redevelopment.

It was previously speculated that employees would move into a yet-to-be built True North Sports and Entertainment development.

A spokesperson for TNSE confirms they put in a comprehensive bid.

The crown corporation doesn’t expect to start construction until the end of 2016 or early 2017 and does not have a move in date.

Liquor and Lotteries announced they were merging in 2012.

About 25 jobs will be impacted through attrition.
