MONTREAL – Merchants on Peel Street are hoping an initiative raised by opposition leader Luc Ferrandez will give them a tax break.

Changes to the municipal bylaw would pertain to shops and restaurants that have been “negatively affected” by on-going construction.
Ferrandez is requesting a small change be made to offer property tax cuts to landlords while road work is being done.

“We’re not in a normal situation when you have 80 per cent of your clientèle that has flown away because of the problems,” Ferrandez said, adding a tax cut of 50 per cent could be in order.
The tax savings would then be passed on to merchants who have suffered during the construction period.
“Give a tax break to owner that should be given to the merchant,” said Ferrandez.
