The bizarre case of a man found in an East Vancouver storm drain

ABOVE: Vancouver Police are still investigating the death of a man found in a storm drain and as Rumina Daya reports, the victim’s family believes his demise is suspicious.

Vancouver Police are no longer investigating the bizarre case of a man’s body found on Sunday in a storm drain. They say the case is not suspicious at this time and have turned over the investigation to the coroner who will determine the exact cause of death.

The shocking discovery of a man’s body in the drain was made by a passerby who noticed clothes strewn around the area.

Despite the police findings, the victim’s family still believes something suspicious is going on.

“I could just imagine him being in that little hole, all by himself all night and all morning,” said Eugenia Oudie, the victim’s mother. “When did he die?”

She refuses to believe her son, Charles, 26, died in a bizarre accident.

“I feel so sorry when I think of it,” she said. “I feel somebody pushed him in there.”

We still don’t know how and when Charles ended up in the storm drain in an East Vancouver alley. A passerby found him Sunday morning, his clothes and shoes just a few feet away. People in the neighbourhood say he may have climbed down to recover his cellphone, but Oudie’s sister says his phone was found in North Vancouver and his empty wallet was discovered at a nearby friend’s house.

“It doesn’t make sense,” said Elisha. “A man found in a storm drain, supposedly he fell in, but who does that? My brother is a smart guy, he’s not going to go there by himself. He obviously needed help to open that thing too.”

Oudie’s family is frustrated said on Sunday that investigators have not returned their calls.

“They shoved this under the rug in five hours,” said Elisha. “Without letting us officially know what happened.”

While they wait for answers broken friends and family are now trying to raise money for the funeral.
