EDMONTON — A man deliberately stepped out in front of the LRT and took his own life on Sunday night, according to Edmonton police.
Emergency crews were called around 7:30 p.m to investigate the second deadly collision between a pedestrian and the LRT in less than a week.
The man in his 30s was hit near 82 Street and 113 Avenue, just north of the Stadium LRT Station near Commonwealth Stadium in central Edmonton.
The man was walking across the tracks at a controlled crossing when he was hit by a northbound train, according to police and witnesses. Bystanders tried to revive the man before paramedics arrived.
“EMS transported the individual to hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” Acting Inspector Nicole Chapdelaine said on scene.
Edmonton police’s major collision unit was leading the investigation. Police and the City of Edmonton said Monday the pedestrian collision was believed to be a suicide, so no further information would be released.
This was the second pedestrian fatality involving the LRT in recent days. On Thursday, Sept. 3, a 23-year-old man was struck and killed when he walked onto the ground-level crossing at 92 Street and 106A Avenue, south of the Stadium station.
He was wearing ear buds at the time.
