EDMONTON – Edmonton police are trying to determine if a young man intentionally walked in front of the LRT train that killed him, or if it was a tragic accident.

The fatal crash happened just before midnight on Thursday, at the LRT crossing on 92 Street near 106A Avenue.

“There are a few very good witnesses to the event,” said Insp. Regan James, Edmonton Police Service. “That’s how I know the individual was wearing ear buds and that he walked directly in front of the train.”

“So obviously it remains to be seen whether that was an intentional act or an accidental scenario, but as we investigate further we’ll determine that.”

The train had been travelling north on the line, and was between Churchill and Stadium stations when it struck the man, who was later confirmed to be 23 years old.

No one else was physically hurt, but the driver was left shaken.

“Obviously the motorman is very shaken; it’s a difficult, traumatic situation for him.”

Edmonton police’s major collision investigation unit was called out. LRT service was slowed for several hours during the investigation, but trains could still operate on the other set of tracks.

Reports indicate the crossing arms were down and the warning lights were flashing when the man was hit.
