Note calls Colorado mom ‘lazy’ and ‘an idiot’ for using handicapped spot

A Colorado mother is speaking out to local media after receiving a note accusing her and her daughter of being “lazy” and calling them “idiots” for using a handicapped parking spot.

But the mother says she’s upset because her daughter suffers from a rare genetic disorder, and her handicap is very much legitimate.

Kaitlyn Barringer, 10, suffers from hypophosphatasia, a disorder which leaves her bones weak and brittle. According to her mother, Naomi, she was born with 13 bone fractures and has suffered dozens more since then.

“I am disabled and they may not know that and I can understand that because I do look normal but I don’t think they have to [leave that note],” Kaitlyn told KUSA News in Colorado.

Naomi Barringer says she found the note Friday afternoon as she went to her car in the parking lot of a Target in Westminster, Colorado.

In computer-typed print, the note slammed the mother and daughter for using the handicapped spot.

“Greetings. I observed you parking in this handicap parking place today. It appears that you are not really handicap. Perhaps just in a hurry or worse, just plain lazy,” the note reads.

“In case you don’t know, these spots are reserved for people who are truly handicapped and because of idiots like you, they have to park farther away or not be able to come here at all.”

Kaitlyn says she was offended someone would assume she was taking advantage of the spot without knowing her story first. She hopes the incident coming to light can be a learning experience for those not familiar with her type of condition.

“This made me very sad, so I feel like I’d try to comfort them and tell them that they aren’t stupid, they aren’t lazy and they have [the handicap parking sign] for a reason. They have the sign because they need it,” she said.
