Okanagan door-to-door mail delivery changes

Canada Post announced today that 24, 650 central Okanagan addresses currently receiving door-to-door delivery, will be converting to community mailboxes in 2016.

“This is part of a five-year initiative to convert one-third of Canadian addresses who still have delivery at the door community mailboxes in an effort to secure postal service for the future,” says John Caines with Canada Post Media Relations.

Caines says one million addresses have been or are in the process of changing to community mailboxes since the conversion program started in 2014.

Throughout the process, residents have been sent various communications from Canada Post about the conversion process, something the affected Okanagan residents can expect to see in their mailboxes within the next couple of days according to Caines.

“The first one is an information package with a mail-in survey,” he says. “The package will tell them how they can express their priorities and preferences about their new delivery method.”

To date, he says 260,000 Canadians have filled out the survey to help Canada Post determine safe, suitable locations for the community mailboxes.

“Customers who have concerns about their ability to access their community mailbox will be invited to contact us via a dedicated phone number and we will work with them to find a solution that meets their needs,” says Caines.

Caines assures no regular full-time or part-time employees are losing their job as a result of the initiative.

“As we have stated throughout the process, we will reduce our workforce largely through attrition as people retire.”

He says the changes come as a result of a decline in mail volumes, adding the conversion is necessary in order to maintain postal service for all Canadians.
