Rosetown, Sask. company fined for improperly storing hazardous material

ROSETOWN, Sask. – A Rosetown, Sask. company has been fined for improperly storing hazardous material. Solvent Buddy pleaded guilty to five counts under The Hazardous Substances and Waste Dangerous Goods Regulations for the violations.

An investigation into the company was launch after a TIP (turn in poachers) call on March 23, 2015 about hazardous material being stored improperly.

During the investigation, conservation and environmental project officers found a number of storage and documentation requirements were not being adhered to.

The company was fined $4,780 in Rosetown provincial court on July 14 for:

  • failing to maintain the required documents and inventory records of hazardous substances and waste dangerous goods at the facility;
  • failing to clearly mark or label hazardous substances and waste dangerous goods stored at the facility; and
  • failing to provide the local fire department with a list and inventory of hazardous substances and waste dangerous goods.

“It’s essential that companies working with hazardous materials implement and follow all environmental regulations,” said Wes Kotyk, from the Ministry of Environment.

“These regulations are in place to protect the environment and ensure the health and safety of staff, local first responders and the general public.”

In addition, the company was fined $1,400 for failing to provide the local fire department and emergency measures organization with a copy of an emergency response contingency plan.
