Vocalist of the world awarded to B.C. boy

WATCH: 12- year-old Ethan David of Surrey was named “vocalist of the world” at a recent competition, Geoff Hastings reports.

Twelve-year-old Ethan David from Surrey, B.C. has won this year’s World Championship of Performing Arts in the Junior Vocalist category. He stole the show performing Defying Gravity from the hit Broadway musical Wicked.

“I wasn’t breathing. I was holding my breath because I never thought we would get here,” said Ethan’s mom and coach Lady Maridel David. They needed to raise $8,000 for Ethan and his family to travel to California where the 2015 World Championship was being held. Ethan didn’t give up and raised money by collecting bottles and selling chocolates every day. “He’s not just a singer, he’s a kid with a beautiful heart. He always thinks of other people, not just himself.” Lady told Global News.

Ethan and his mom rehearsed together every day for six months leading up to the competition and all that focus clearly paid off. Ethan’s life forever changed when he was awarded ‘Junior Vocalist of the World’.

“The funny thing about that…” Ethan’s dad Frolian explained “…was when he got the trophy, the first thing that he said was ‘Can I eat ice cream now, Dad?”

Music producers from Calgary and Los Angeles have approached Ethan to work with him on future music endeavors. The song Defying Gravity had special significance to Ethan with the lyrics “You won’t bring me down.”  If you have a goal in mind, Ethan’s advice is to “always follow your dreams, and never give up.”
