WINNIPEG — It was quite the sight for Manitobans near Lake Winnipeg Saturday afternoon.
Environment Canada has confirmed a tornado touch down around 10 to 15 kilometres south of Winnipeg Beach and Highway 8 just after 12:30 p.m.
Mark Melsness a meteorologist with Environment Canada, tells Global News it stayed touched down for between 20 to 30 minutes.
“That’s actually quite long,” he said, adding there have been no reports of damage.
A Tornado Warning was issued for the R.M’s of St.Andrews and Gimli, St.Clements and Grand Beach. Those warnings have now ended.
Environment Canada said Saturday afernoon, they were tracking a severe thunderstorm that produced a waterspout approaching the Grand Beach area and the waterspout will likely move on land and become a significant tornado as it continues to track eastward. The storm actually weakened as it approached land and it doesn’t appear a tornado touched down.
Environment Canada has issued a weather advisory warning that conditions will be favourable for the development of funnel clouds Saturday. It is in place for much of southeastern Manitoba, including Winnipeg.
If you do encounter threatening weather, take cover immediately.
Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.
