Surrey man shot dead trying to stop man breaking into his home

WATCH: A community is on edge after a 42-year-old father of two was fatally shot while trying to stop an intruder. Jeremy Hunka reports.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is looking into a shooting in Surrey after a man has died. Chief Superintendent Bill  Fordy, with Surrey RCMP, says the victim was trying to stop a random man breaking into his home when he was shot.

Police were called to 64th Avenue and 165th Street after neighbours heard gunfire just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday night. The victim, 42-year-old Colin Hill, got involved in an altercation with a suspect and he was shot. He was at home with his family at the time.

Emergency crews tried to save him, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect fled in what was later found to be a stolen car. Several hours later, just before 2 a.m. Monday, Burnaby RCMP was called to an apartment in the 7300-block of MacPherson Avenue after a witness reported a man waving a gun and attempting to break into a home. A 22-year-old Surrey man was arrested on the scene and is now facing charges in relation to both incidents.

“While there are no words to express my outrage for this senseless loss of life, I am encouraged that a suspect has been arrested by RCMP so quickly and a charge of 2nd degree murder is pending,” Hepner said in a statement.

“Should he be found guilty, I sincerely hope that the courts will see fit to punish him to the full extent of the law for this heinous and senseless crime.”

Surrey RCMP moved quickly to get information out to all Lower Mainland police departments, and due to their quick action was able to get the information needed to make an arrest, said Sgt. Stephanie Ashton, media relations officer for IHIT.

WATCH:  Chief Superintendent Bill Fordy delivers an emotional statement to the media, following the shooting death of Surrey realtor Colin Hill.

“There is no question that these are the most painful moments that a family can endure,” says Fordy. “For the police, they are also the hardest. And while we are confident that we have quickly taken the person responsible for this horrible crime off the streets, I am still angry at the pointless loss of life. This tragic event is not related to recent shooting conflict in our city, and I remind you that if you see something or someone suspicious to please call the police.”
