EDMONTON – Two people were killed and six others were injured during a crash southwest of Edmonton Wednesday morning.

RCMP said a family of six was travelling inside a van when it was struck by another vehicle crossing the intersection at Highway 13 and Range Road 61, which is 61 kilometres west of Piegon Lake.

A woman and a man in his late teens, who were inside the van, were killed. Another person was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton by STARS Air Ambulance with critical injuries, and the remaining three individuals in the van were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

RCMP believe the family is from Rocky Mountain House.

According to police, the vehicle that hit the van didn’t stop at a stop sign. The two people inside the vehicle suffered non life threatening injuries and were also taken to hospital. The vehicle was reportedly driven by a youth who may not have a drivers license, RCMP added.

Police believe speed may have been a factor.

“The intersection is a busier intersection but at this hour, at 1:15 in the morning, it’s actually quite quiet. It’s quite a well lit-up intersection and the signs are very well present,” said Sgt. Corey Kyle, RCMP.

Charges against the youth drive could be laid.
