A 50-year-old man is dead after a fire in a Surrey basement suite early Saturday morning.
Firefighters were called to a home on the 15600 block of 82nd Ave. around 12:30 a.m. They arrived to find smoke pouring from the basement and an unresponsive man in the unit. Crews doused the flames and pulled the man out of the unit, but were unable to revive him and he died at the scene.
Surrey Fire Service Assistant Chief Steve Robinson said in a statement that the fire was likely caused by “smoking materials.” The smoke alarm for the basement suite was disconnected and found on top of the fridge.
Robinson said the tragic blaze serves as a reminder that residents should test their smoke alarm. Surrey residents who have a non-working smoke alarm can call 604-543-6700 and the Surrey Fire Service can install a free smoke alarm.
