EDMONTON – Love for the NDP may be slipping in Alberta, according to a new poll.

The Mainstreet/Postmedia poll released on Thursday found the Wildrose party’s approval rating has jumped ahead of the NDP.

“If an election were held today, a few short months after the election of the NDP and Premier Notley, more Albertans would vote for the Opposition Wildrose led by Brian Jean than any other party,” said Quito Maggi, president of Mainstreet.

The poll found 33 per cent of Albertans would vote for the Wildrose, 26 per cent would vote for the NDP and 20 per cent would vote for the Progressive Conservatives.

While the NDP’s popularity has decreased since the May election, Premier Rachel Notley’s approval rating remains the highest among the provincial leaders according to the poll. Her approval rating sits at 50 per cent, while Brian Jean is at 45 per cent, Ric McIver is at 25 per cent, David Swann is at 34 per cent and Greg Clark is at 36 per cent.

“The honeymoon may be over for Premier Notley as the realities of an NDP government sink in for Albertans.”

“Lots of decisions are being made,” says Maggi. “While it may pay off in the long run to do all the heavy lifting at once for now it is leaving a mixed impression,”

Maggi added support is split across Alberta, with the NDP continuing to enjoy overwhelming support in Edmonton, the PCs regaining the lead in Calgary and the Wildrose Party leading across the rest of the province.
