A section of Scenic Drive South, between 10th Avenue South & 11th Street South, is the latest road in the city to find itself under construction.
Overlay work along that street is expected to last about a week and the city says it’s the last major roadway that will need work.
“That’s probably the biggest project that was left,” said Road Infrastructure Manager, Richard Brummond. “The biggest section left for impact to drivers and major roadways.”
Whoop Up Drive has been a major project for construction crews this summer. The bridge is currently down to two lanes in each direction but soon it will be reduced further.
“On Monday (July 6th), it will go down to a single lane eastbound. That will be for about ten days,” said Brummond.
To help with the flow of congested traffic once lanes are reduced further, the city will introduce a ‘zipper merge’ concept.
A zipper merge occurs when a lane is closed ahead but drivers continue to use the lane until they near the closure, at which point the cars in the affected lane merge into the lane beside them in a zipper-like pattern – one car in the open lane goes followed by a car in the closing lane, taking turns one at a time, and being courteous.

There are still 11 active road construction sites across the city, with a further 11 scheduled. Only one arterial roadway is left to repair, with the remaining projects located in residential areas.
