Calgarians bracing for blazing hot weekend

WATCH: Sarah Offin checks in with some of the most vulnerable athletes, running, cycling and jumping this weekend during scorching temperatures.

CALGARY- With temperatures expected to flirt with the plus 30 degree Celsius mark this weekend, active Calgarians and their animals are being asked to exercise caution outdoors.

Emergency officials say the hot temperatures always come with a risk of heat stroke and that you should call 9-1-1 if you’re concerned about someone overheating.

“Generally, children are more susceptible,” said EMS spokesperson Stuart Brideaux. “They don’t regulate their body temperatures the same way as adults. (It) tends to catch up with them.”

Riders at this weekend’s National show jumping tournament at Spruce Meadows will be paying close attention to their horses as the temperatures soar.

“You definitely notice as a rider when your horse isn’t doing well in the heat,” said Kelly Cross-Brix, a horse program manager and rider at Spruce Meadows. “They get lethargic just likes us.”

Many Calgarians planning an active weekend are planning to take precautions as well. About 300 people will be taking part in the Sasi Senior Jaunt and organizers say they’ll be keeping a close eye on participants.

“It is just a fun run but I know we have some competitive people signed up and they’ll take off as soon as the bell goes,” said Janice Hillmer, the run’s volunteer coordinator. “But we are really encouraging people to pay attention to their bodies.”

Emergency officials are encouraging Calgarians to use plenty of sunscreen this weekend and to make sure both people and animals drink plenty of water.
