Saskatchewan Huskies name new women’s volleyball coach

SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan Huskies women’s volleyball team has a new head coach. Huskies Athletics announced Wednesday that Mark Dodds will take over the team on June 1.

Dodds will become the sixth head coach in the history of the program.

“I am very excited and honoured to have the opportunity to coach the Huskie women’s volleyball team,” said Dodds in a release.

The Lucky Lake, Sask. product is no stranger to the Huskies, having been a standout for the men’s volleyball team during his playing career.

In 2001-02, he was named to the Canada West all-rookie team and in 2005-06 was named both the Canada West MVP and the CIS player of the year, helping lead the Huskies to first place in the regular season.

Following his university career, Dodds went on to play for Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team from 2005-09. He moved into the coaching ranks in 2011 as an assistant coach for the Huskies men’s volleyball team under head coach Brian Gavlas, a position he held until today’s announcement.

“Throughout my playing and coaching careers I have learned what it takes to be a top level CIS athlete and I look forward to working with these young women, helping them strive for excellence both academically and athletically,” said Dodds.

“We know that he will be instrumental in leading the Huskie women’s volleyball program to the next level,” added Huskie athletic director Basil Hughton.
