2 house fires, 1 garage blaze in Saskatoon on Sunday

SASKATOON – It was a busy Sunday for the Saskatoon Fire Department. Crews had to deal with two house fires and a garage blaze.

Just before 6 a.m. crews were called to the 1700-block of Avenue G North for a house fire.

An aggressive interior attack was started after crews encountered heavy smoke and heat. Fire department officials said firefighting efforts were made harder due to the extreme clutter in basement and throughout the house.

The fire was brought under control in an hour.

Everyone inside made it out, but a family cat perished in the fire.

Damage is estimated at $200,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters were then called out to the 2100-block of 17th Street West at 3 p.m. after multiple 911 calls were received for a garage fire.

Arriving crews found a garage in flames along with a fence. The fire was brought under control in five minutes.

Damage has been estimated at $20,000.

The third call came in around 7:40 p.m. after dispatchers received multiple calls of a house fire at 131 Wickenden Cres. Crews arrived to find flames coming from the attic of the home.

Firefighters did a quick search of the home to ensure everyone was out.

The roof was deemed unsafe and a defensive fire attack was started, with crews spraying water through the soffits in an effort to control the fire.

At one point, a chain saw was used to cut a hole in the roof to battle the blaze.

Firefighters brought the fire under control in 40 minutes.

A fire investigator determined the cause of the blaze was accidental.

The initial damage estimate is $450,000.
