Number of Sask. wildfires continues to grow

REGINA – The hot dry weather continues to be a major concern for Saskatchewan wildfire crews as the number of forest fires in Saskatchewan continues to climb.

As of Saturday morning, 30 wildfires are burning in the province, which includes 14 new fires in the past 24-hours. The total is about double the normal for this time of year.

Half of the fires are in the Buffalo Narrows area, while the others are in the Prince Albert and La Ronge areas.

In the northern RM of Torch River, people have been evacuated because of a fierce wildfire in the area. Highway 35 north of the town of Love has been closed.

Fire bans are in place for all of Northern Saskatchewan, including provincial parks and recreational sites.

Humans are being blamed for most of the fires.

Total to date in 2015: 199

Total in 2014: 115
