KELOWNA – Work starts later this month on safety improvements to Highway 97 between Kelowna and Lake Country.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is spending $2.5 million to install concrete median barriers on about nine kilometres of the highway.
In phase 1 of the project, barriers will be placed between University Way and the north end of Duck Lake. That work is slated for completion this summer.
Phase 2 will see the barriers continuing north to Commonwealth Road as well as some highway access improvements. That should be completed in the fall of 2016.
The improvements stem from an engineering safety review that noted crossover crash risks combined with high traffic volumes.
“Safety on our roads is a top priority and these improvements will benefit all motorists,” says Kelowna-Mission MLA Steve Thomson in a news release.
Most of the barrier installation will be done in off-peak travel hours but will require single lane closures.
