WATCH: Pope demands women get equal pay for equal work

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis called for women to receive the same pay as men for the same work at the Vatican on Wednesday.

Speaking to thousands of people gathered for his weekly audience, the Pope said: “For example, support with conviction the right of women to equal pay for equal work.”

“Why should it be taken for granted that women earn less than men? No, (women should have) the same rights.”

The crowd cheered enthusiastically as the Pope then veered from his prepared text and warned the crowd that men should not be sexist.

“Not even this argument that men always want to dominate women is valid,” he said.

“This is an insult. This is not true. It is a form of machismo. Let’s not make the bad mistake that Adam did.”

He said men should not make the same mistake as Adam, who, as it is written in the Old Testament, blamed Eve for making him eat the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden.
