CALGARY – The City of Calgary is considering more than doubling fines for those who don’t move their cars to make way for street sweepers.
Currently, residents who neglect to move their vehicle are fined $50, and the City of Calgary covers the costs of towing their vehicle out of the way so street sweeping can continue.
However, a new report set to be submitted to councillors on May 20th proposes increasing the fine to $120 to help offset the cost of towing the vehicles.
“There is always somebody who left parked here when they are doing their street cleaning,” complains Calgary resident Allison Saklofske, who supports the idea of an increased fine. “It’s frustrating, because we need our streets cleaned.”
Each year, the City of Calgary removes approximately 40,000 cubic metres of material from 14,600 kilometers of city streets during spring clean-up.
