Victim identified in Winnipeg’s latest homicide

Sources say the victim in the Norwood Flats shooting death is Garry Godson. Facebook

WINNIPEG – The man shot and killed outside an apartment building in Norwood Flats Monday was 31 year old Garry Godson, according to family and other sources.

Police haven’t made any arrests or released any information on a possible motive for the killing.

Godson has had run-ins with the law in the past, including a 2006 arrest for an alleged aggravated assault and kidnapping that didn’t go to trial after the alleged victim didn’t show up in court; and a 2012 conviction for dangerous driving and fleeing from police.

A memorial Facebook group in Godson’s name appeared online Tuesday.

“I Love you Garry Godson my little brother with all my heart thank you for always loving me, protecting me, supporting our family, Mom is crying and so broken, I don’t know if she will ever recover from this as you are her everything,” Godson’s sister Lexi Sanfino wrote, along with a plea for anyone with information to come forward and help police find the killer.

The early morning shooting shook up residents in the normally quiet Norwood Flats neighbourhood.

“I heard five shots,” said Patricia Smith.

“It came in like three and four, a pattern, boom, boom, boom and a slight pause and then more shots,” said Katrina Rackham.

Gunshots rang out at about 12:40 Monday morning and now police are piecing together why the man was shot to death outside an apartment building on Highfield Street just off St. Mary’s Road.

“I just saw this guy on a stretcher roll out to the back of the ambulance,” said Noah Hamelin, “and the ambulance was there for 10 minutes and then it drove away.”

Hamelin watched as eight police cruiser cars, fire trucks and an ambulance rushed to the scene and in the middle of the night, officers banged on doors looking for answers.

“They asked if I had heard a car going away quickly,” said Smith, “I said ‘nothing just the shots’.”

12 hours later, forensic officers were still at the scene, going in and out of the apartment and taking photos near the building, including a parked car. No one has been arrested.

For many it was a sleepless night, troubled by what happened so close to home.

“It’s normally a very quiet neighbourhood,” said Smith, “people are usually walking their dogs coming and going.”

Police want to talk to anyone who can help solve the city’s sixth homicide of the year.

“A little tid bit of information could be critical in a case,” said Constable Rob Carver, “could be critical to solving a complex puzzle and we don’t know until we get it.”
