EDMONTON — A 25-year-old man was sent to hospital with life-threatening injuries early Monday morning, after being shot several times in west Edmonton.

Police responded to a weapons complaint around 12:40 a.m. in a park near 184 Street and 93 Avenue, in the Belmead neighbourhood. Officers arrived to find the young man laying on the ground in distress.

“There was a series of five or six really loud bangs,” said Bill Lewis, who lives near the scene. “I knew it wasn’t a car backfiring.”

“We heard a car speeding off right after that,” he added.

The victim was rushed to hospital by EMS, where he remained in critical condition following emergency surgery.

A road in the area where the shooting happened was blocked off by police, and officers could be seen investigating the scene early Monday morning. As the sun came up police were interviewing and taking statements from local residents, even asking for any local security footage.
