BATTLEFORD, Sask. – A judge is expected to bring down a verdict today in the case of a young man accused of killing a Saskatchewan couple when he was a teenager. The 19-year-old man is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Genne and Teresa Nolin of Rapid View.

The Nolin’s were found dead in their Rapid View home in October 2012. The Nolin’s were well known in the community for their involvement in chuckwagon racing and their work with foster children.

The accused was 17 at the time and his name cannot be revealed.

During final arguments in January, Crown rrosecutor Bill Burge asked that the man be found guilty as charged as he was aware of the decisions he and a younger accomplice made.

Defence lawyer George Combe has suggested that the judge should consider evidence of the accused’s intoxication that night. Combe says alcohol would have affected his client’s ability to deliberately plan to kill the Nolin’s.

The alleged accomplice testified during the trial that it was the older youth who hatched a plan to kill the Nolin’s while the teens were drinking beer. The witness, who was 14 when the Nolin’s died, also testified that he didn’t want to murder the two, but felt influenced by the older boy.
