KELOWNA — The SPCA is starting a new chapter in Kelowna, with ground breaking on a new building to help rescue farm animals.
The new 2,500 square foot building is under construction on the same lot as the current shelter. It will include six indoor-outdoor stalls, a tack room and a hay storage area.
“Many people think of companion animals when they think of the BC SPCA’s work, but farm anials represent a significant focus of our organization’s rescue work,” says SPCA CEO, Craig Daniell. “Last year we took 117 horses and 143 cattle into custody through cruelty investigations and spent in excess of $200,000 for boarding, hauling and other costs. Having a facility where we can care for these animals ourselves will make a tremendous difference.”
The new building is being funded by the BC government, SPCA donors and a grant from the Central Okanagan Foundation.
Construction is expected to finish this June.
