CALGARY – A fire in the community of Rundle has completely destroyed one house and damaged another.

A police officer on patrol called the Calgary Fire Department around 2 a.m. on Friday when he spotted flames coming from a home in the 2300 block of 50th Street N.E.

When firefighters arrived on scene, the blaze had completely engulfed one home and was quickly spreading to another. Crews also found two ruptured gas lines.

Officials say both homes involved had working smoke alarms which woke the families and helped them to get out safely.

Ten people living in nearby homes were forced to leave as a precaution but were kept warm in Calgary Transit buses.

Firefighters were able to keep the flaring gas lines under control until ATCO crews arrived and shut them down.

“With gas lines, we have to control the flames… we don’t want to extinguish them because if we put them out, then we’re flooding the area with natural gas,” said Battalion Chief Al Magwood.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials say it appears the blaze started on the outside of the home.
